MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Despite the freezing temperatures, Memphis crime just doesn’t chill out. A Memphis couple said Thursday evening, they became victims of a carjacking crime during this winter blast.

“You don’t know what you would do until you’re actually in that situation because, me personally, I froze,” said LaMeka Washington.

Washington said her family bundled up and drove to the Exxon Hop-In gas station on Winchester Road for water, but she said she felt like something was “off.”

“So my husband put his car in park, the car was still running, got out the car to walk over to pump one just to check on our son to make sure he’s okay,” said Washington.

She said moments after her husband walked “feet away” from gas pump No. 4, a man approached her 2008 Dodge Ram and pointed a gun at her.

“He said, ‘B**** get the f*** out the car,’ and he grabbed [the gun] to show me so I could see it. I don’t know what kind it was, it was black. So I said, ‘okay,’ I opened up the door and I got out the car,” said Washington.

According to the Memphis police report, the suspect hopped into the truck and took off heading down Riverdale Road.

Washington said she tried to review the footage from the gas station but was denied. She said the cost of this crime is why she’s considering moving.

“Around 5:24 p.m., that put the icing on the cake for me. I have to go, this happened within minutes from where I live that’s not to mention my spouse visits the store every day, literally,” said Washington.

Memphis police said this case is still under investigation.

Police say officers responded to one other carjacking in the area earlier this month.
