Hernando police officer to undergo surgery after slipping while helping driver stuck on ice
HERNANDO, Miss. (WMC) - A Hernando police officer is expected to undergo surgery after he reportedly slipped while assisting a driver stuck on an icy road Friday afternoon.
The entire Mid-South has been burdened by dangerous driving conditions due to snow, ice, and sub-freezing temperatures that have persisted for several days.
According to Chief Shane Ellis with the Hernando Police Department, the officer was helping a driver who became stuck on McIngvale Road near the Magnolias at Hernando Apartments around 4 p.m. Friday when he slipped on the ice and injured his leg.
The officer, who has not been identified, was transported to Regional One Hospital in Memphis for treatment.
He is expected to undergo surgery on his leg due to the nature of his injuries.
Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing until Sunday.
Drivers are advised to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.
