MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - A portion of Mount Moriah Road was blocked for several hours Tuesday night after a fatal crash on the I-240 overpass.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office says one person died on the overpass after evading a deputy during a traffic stop and crashing just a short distance away.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office says the traffic stop was initiated at Mount Moriah Road near American Way at 4:15 p.m.

As the deputy exited his car and approached the driver’s side window, the unknown driver made a U-turn and sped north.

By the time the deputy turned around, the suspect’s car had crashed into another vehicle on the overpass and overturned just a few yards away.

The suspect was pronounced dead on the scene.

Deputies say two people from the other car were rushed to Regional One Hospital in critical condition.

Drivers are asked to use an alternative route to access Mount Moriah Road.

There’s no ETA on when the road will reopen.
