MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Extremely cold temperatures can create a lot of challenges for homeowners leaving many without heat and HVAC companies working around the clock.

Best Care Home Service experts say that routine maintenance on your heating and cooling system is critical.

Virginia Hope lives in Olive Branch, Mississippi. She said her family hasn’t been able to heat their home in the downstairs area since Monday.

Even spending lots of time cuddled up with the kiddos wasn’t enough during a week where temperatures dropped below freezing.

”We’ve had a few space heaters in each bedroom and the fireplaces helps too. At nighttime is when it gets the worst, I woke up this morning and it said it was 58° in here,” said Hope.

So, she called in reinforcements Wednesday morning. Technicians discovered a low flame sensor signal in her furnace.

Best Care Home Services said the issue is a common problem but quick to fix. To avoid heat issues that lead to repairs or replacements, they say you should:

  • Check and change your furnace filters
  • Keep your thermostat set at 70 degrees or below
  • Keep coils clean

“The unit wasn’t recognizing that it was making a flame, so I would light the burner on the furnace and then it would shut itself off because it didn’t recognize there was an actual flame in the unit,” said Best Care Home Services Manager John Mcleroy.
