Child rape suspect escapes custody then asks to be turned back in after 45 minutes in snow
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - A man suspected of child rape is nice and toasty Tuesday night inside 201 Poplar.
Memphis police say that as Memphis experienced snowfall Sunday night, 20-year-old Demarkus Davis managed to escape a patrol car en route to the Shelby County Jail, but quickly changed his mind once he was out in the bitter cold.
A corrections officer flagged down Memphis police at 9:52 p.m. Sunday while at the intersection of North Danny Thomas Boulevard and Washington Avenue.
He told officers that he was transporting Davis to 201 Poplar after picking him up on a warrant for two counts of child rape when he escaped while still in handcuffs.
After Davis’ escape, officers put out a department-wide broadcast with his description.
His blue jeans and hoodie didn’t hold up to the freezing temperatures for long.
Memphis had an average temperature of 13 degrees Fahrenheit at the time Davis fled. Plus, it was actively snowing.
Less than 45 minutes after his escape, Davis reportedly flagged down a stranger less than a mile away on Madison Avenue and asked them to call police so that he could turn himself in.
Davis now faces two counts of child rape and one count of escape.
He is being held on a $75,000 bond and is set to appear in court Wednesday.
Court records say his child rape charges stem from an incident on April 1, 2022, but no further details are available.
