MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Newly-sworn in Memphis Mayor Paul Young held his first press conference as mayor on Thursday morning.

It came on the heels of the first meeting with the violent crime task force, which includes Memphis Police Department, the district attorney, juvenile courts and members of Shelby County and State government.

“We are on a mission to support the citizens of this community,” Young said.

The group discussed initiatives like Police Chief CJ Davis’ plan to stop violent offenders, District Attorney Mulroy’s plan to expedite violent crimes in court, and the juvenile court’s plan to provide programs for the youth.

“We are going to have no tolerance for the chaos that we have seen on our streets,” Young said.

Young says there is a small subset of the population that is committing violent crimes, and it is a priority to get guns out of their hands and get those individuals off the streets.

Chief Davis reflected on the one-year anniversary of Tyre Nichols’ death and said the lessons learned include a level of supervision over the police department and to move forward with compassion and supporting officers who are doing good work while still holding them accountable.
