MISHAWAKA, Ind. (WNDU/Gray News) - A man who was trapped in his car for six days and survived by drinking rainwater was reunited with the people who rescued him.

Matt Reum met with the fishermen who found him and the first responders who rescued him on Monday to thank them in person for saving his life.

Authorities say Reum, 27, was heading west on I-94 before veering off to avoid hitting a deer and coming to a stop in Salt Creek in Porter County, Indiana, on Dec. 20.

Reum was pinned inside of his truck and unable to reach his phone to call for help. Also, his truck could not be seen from the road.

The next Tuesday afternoon, authorities were called to the area after Mario Garcia and Nivardo Delatorre were looking for fishing holes and spotted Reum’s crashed truck under the overpass.

Reum suffered several broken bones and had to have a leg amputated, but has since been upgraded to “good condition” as he continues inpatient rehabilitation and Memorial Hospital, according to Beacon Health System.

A GoFundMe was created to help with Reum’s medical expenses.
