COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX/Gray News) - Firefighters in Texas helped a homeowner get their longtime pet tortoise inside during some dangerous cold temperatures earlier this week.

On Monday, the College Station Fire Department was called to a house to help move Jack, a 150-pound, 24-year-old tortoise from his outside shed to inside the home.

The Adair family said they have had Jack since he was a baby and they have made improvements to his habitat over the years, but they wanted to get him inside as temperatures dipped below freezing.

“We made his shelter more winter-proof this time but just with it being so much colder than it usually is we wanted to move him inside,” Laura Adair said.

With the help of a recycling bin, firefighters were able to load Jack up from his backyard pen and get him inside.

Adair added she’ll probably rely on her boyfriend and his brother to get Jack back outside once it warms up.

The family said they are grateful for the firefighters taking the time to help them.
