MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Three Memphis-area bus stops were relocated closer to Head Start and preschool programs as a push to ensure a safe trip to and from school.

The initiative is being led by The National Head Start Association and Civic Mapping Initiative to promote safe bus stop practices for preschool and Head Start students and their families.

Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) joined the charge by relocating three bus stops. One of them was unveiled Monday at Porter-Leath Early Head Start Center in Cordova.

“It was about 500 to 1,000 feet away from the center and it didn’t have a sidewalk,” explained Sheronda Smith, Porter-Leath Early Head Start Director. “So, we’re trying to make sure that our children can get to school safely. It’s also an easier access for them.”

The other two bus stops were relocated to Belle Forest Elementary and First Baptist Broad.

“Safety is our number one priority in everything that we do,” explained MATA Chief Executive Officer Gary Rosenfeld. “So, it’s important that we identify and place bus stops in a safe environment.”
