PARAGOULD, Ark. (KAIT/Gray News) – An Arkansas cowboy was called to the rescue to save a neighbor’s calf from a frozen pond Thursday morning.

Caleb Allbritton noticed a calf in the pond he was working near, but he couldn’t find a rope. So, he called Max Bishop, who he knew would be able to solve the problem.

Sure enough, when Bishop got the phone call, he grabbed some rope and headed on over.

“We just drove the truck right to the pond and just ran up there, got [the calf] roped, and got it out,” Bishop said.

Due to a recent surgery, it was difficult for Bishop to throw the lasso. He lost a rope in his first attempt, but luckily, he had a second one to use, and he was successful.

“It was really lucky because where the calf had been laying, the ice had already started breaking and melting,” Bishop said.

The calf’s owner, John Lane, said this is the worst time of the year for his livestock.

“When the ponds melt, the calves will still go out on them, and before you know it, they’re out in it,” Lane said. “I’ve lost five calves already.”

Bishop said he’s always willing to help his neighbors.

Now, all is well for the calf, and Bishop will be waiting for the next call when he’s needed.
