LAFAYETTE CO., Miss. (WMC) - Snow and sleet blanketed the Mid-South and bitter cold remains following winter weather.

Action News 5′s team coverage on winter weather continued south in Oxford, Mississippi.

The Missisippi Department of Transportation officials say that 49 counties have iced roadways and new ice that fell over Monday night and this is on top of ice that fell on Sunday night.

MDOT crews have been plowing roadways and highways.

In Lafayette County, emergency management and the county’s road department have decided not to plow roads because they fear it will be too dangerous.

“It’s our opinion that due to the extended sleeting/icing period that we saw at the beginning of this event that we anticipate is underneath the snow,” said Beau Moore with Lafayette County Emergency Management. “If we just remove the snow and with the continued below-freezing temperatures we’re going to see the next couple days, it will just make the roads extremely slick and dangerous to drive on.”

Lafayette County School District is out of school on Tuesday, Jan. 16 and Wednesday, Jan. 17.

The school district’s closing might be extended with the decision to not plow roads.

“We learned in our last snow event with our partners at MDOT that by removing that snow layer potentially hindered travel greater than it helped travel,” said Moore.

There is no information yet on when roads will be plowed.
