MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLGW) has offered some insight into the power outages that knocked out the lights to a large swath of Shelby County on Christmas evening.

At its peak, more than 14,000 customers were without power, largely impacting the Germantown and Collierville areas.

A lengthier outage earlier in the night also impacted Starry Nights, with about 3,500 customers affected in Cordova in total.

According to MLGW, power was restored for customers in Germantown and Collierville in less than an hour.

The outage in Cordova, however, lasted several hours beginning around 3:30 p.m.

Starry Nights closed for the night once power was not restored by 8:30 p.m.

All but roughly 130 customers had power restored by 9 p.m.

MLGW says that for the Shelby Farms/Cordova area, the blackout was the result of a broken utility pole. Crews are reportedly unsure of the cause of the break.

In Collierville, transmission lines that feed an MLGW substation went offline, causing an outage. Crews are reportedly still investigating the source of the issue.
