MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Snowfall blanketed the Mid-South on Sunday.

Multiple inches of snow fell, beginning in the Memphis metro around 2 p.m.

With snow covering the area around FedExForum, Public Works Director Robert Knecht says the City has even hired contract crews to help salt & plow the streets around the arena with a big MLK Day game on tap Monday at 5 p.m.

”The major roads going to the Forum are gonna be, given the service, they kind of make sure that people can safely get in and out on, TDOT is going to help us with that,” Knecht said. “They’re going to try to make sure that major thoroughfares down there, that Danny Thomas, Second and Third, they give us service as well.”

Further south in Mississippi, emergency crews are urging people to stay home.

“Just stay home and if you don’t have to be out, don’t be out in it,” DeSoto County Emergency Services Director Chris Olson said. “If you do get out in it, make sure that you have some kind of kit in your car to get some warmth and protection. Charge your cell phones. Keep them charged, get your batteries up so you have ways to communicate as needed.”

Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves issued a state of emergency due to winter weather across the state.

Across the bridge in Arkansas, emergency crews have been working to keep roads passable.

The Arkansas National Guard was deployed to help Arkansas State Police with emergencies on interstates and highways across the state.

“And that’s why the Governor has activated the Arkansas National Guard to provide that support to the Arkansas State Police,” West Memphis Office of Emergency Management Director Dewayne Rose said. “Arkansas has 12 troops throughout the state and each troop has Arkansas National Guardsmen stationed with them during this winter weather event.”

Monday is also a First Alert Weather Day with more winter weather expected to continue to cover the Mid-South. The Action News 5 First Alert Weather team will keep you updated with the latest forecast.
